WP02 - Concept Development & Evaluation

Work Package 02 - Concept Development & Evaluation

Work Package 02 is concerned with the general iterative development and evaluation of the LiftWEC concept. The specific objectives of this work package are as follows:

  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of the LiftWEC concept that can be used to guide the identification of the best configuration of LiftWEC. This understanding will encompass all aspects of the LiftWEC design including hydrodynamics, structural design, operations and maintenance, control requirements, cost of energy and social/environmental impacts
  • To develop evaluation criteria and associated tools for the development and assessment of the LiftWEC concept
  • To identify one or more promising configurations of the LiftWEC concept that may minimise the cost of energy whilst ensuring that it has an acceptable social and environmental impact

Work Package Updates

Work Package 02 Update – Project Month 15

Work Package 02 Update – Project Month 15 The Conceptual Design work stream is intended to ensure the success of the whole-system approach taken to LiftWEC’s development through; (1) the generation of specific knowledge required to answer outstanding design questions, and (2) collation of learning from all other work streams to inform best practice design in an interdisciplinary manner. A three-day workshop was held to gather knowledge relating to the design of possible LiftWEC systems.

Work Package 02 Update – Project Month 06

Work Package 02 Update – Project Month 06 Concept Design involves coordination of all project works towards generating knowledge to feed into the design and development of the LiftWEC system. To help provide guidance to the other work streams, Deliverable D2.1 “Preliminary Report on Synthesis of Design Knowledge” has been produced which identifies the key points of design knowledge which must be generated in order to develop an understanding of the LiftWEC system’s characteristics and

D2.2 Identification of evaluation criteria

D2.2 Identification of evaluation criteria Download Deliverable D2.2 The objective of this report is to review the existing literature relevant to the early stage evaluation of WECs and propose a set of relevant evaluation criteria for the LiftWEC project. These criteria will be used throughout the LiftWEC project to evaluate the potential of the different concept candidates and will be adapted to the level of maturity of the proposed concepts. Importantly, the criteria should not
